Golden Pond, KY – Land Between the Lakes officials are proposing a controlled burn on almost 5,000 acres along U-S 68 / Kentucky 80. Forest managers want to set back shade-tolerant trees and allow intolerant species, like oak and hickory a chance to grow. Officials tell the Paducah Sun the proposed area hasn't been burned in about 35 years. Shawnee National Forest managers are also planning 23 separate controlled burns on about 6,000 acres of southern Illinois forest with much the same goal.
