Mayfield, KY – The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Kentucky have asked the Mayfield zoning board to reverse its August 24 decision denying a permit for a mosque. The civil rights group cites the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which gives houses of worship greater protection in zoning cases. The ACLU released a statement saying the board acted improperly because they did not hear from the permit petitioner, Khader Ahmed. The ACLU also notes that the board previously approved the permit as a meeting that was nullified because it did not provide for public comment. Mayfield City Attorney Boyd Neely was not immediately available for comment.
