Police Close 2009 Death Case; Graves Coroner Disagrees

By Chris Taylor

Mayfield, KY – Kentucky State Police have closed the case of a 2009 death as non-criminal. Investigators no longer believe Betty Kelsey of Trigg County was the victim of a homicide but instead believe she committed suicide. Her body was found last year in the parking lot of Mayfield's Jackson Purchase Medical Center after she had been missing from her home for almost two weeks. Toxicology tests and her husband's testimony have led detectives to conclude Kelsey took her own life. However, Graves County Coroner Phillip McClain tells the Paducah Sun he doesn't agree and in his opinion the cause of death is still inconclusive. McClain wants to share with detectives concerns he's heard from Kelsey's family members after meeting with them last week.
