Fort Campbell, KY – A Fort Campbell soldier who saved a woman from drowning in June is set to receive the Soldier's Medal. It's the highest award for valor offered in non-combat situations. Specialist Jose Ortiz-Fernandez of the 63rd Chemical Company witnessed a woman drive her vehicle into the Cumberland River. Ortiz-Fernandez jumped into river and dragged the woman out. He then used First Aid to clear the water from her system. Clarksville police previously reported the woman was trying to commit suicide. An awards ceremony will be October 7 at Fort Campbell.
