Revolutionary Soldier Grave at Fort Campbell

By AP

Fort Campbell, KY – One of the many private cemeteries found on Fort Campbell grounds contains the final resting place of a Revolutionary War soldier and an early Tennessee pioneer. The grave of Samuel Smith, who died in 1837, will be getting a new marker during a ceremony today. According to a Daughters of the American Revolution biography, Smith was born in North Carolina in 1762 and fought at the Battle of Brier Creek in eastern Georgia. Later in life, Smith led groups of settlers from North Carolina into Tennessee and finally settled down in the state in 1833. The group says he died at the age of 75 and many of his family relatives continue to live the area.
