Paducah, KY – U.S. Senate Candidates Jack Conway and Rand Paul continue to spar over differences on the federal budget, tax structure and the federal healthcare overhaul. In a Paducah debate this morning Paul explained his recently reported stance that he would replace the federal income tax with a federal sales tax.
"The tax code is 16-thousand pages long, we need tax simplification. If we can do a sales tax instead of an income tax and not raise taxes on anyone. I'm all for it."
The push for a nationwide sales tax is championed by a Texas Based Advocacy group. Conway pounced on the organization's proposed policy that includes a high sales tax rate.
"Is a 23 percent sales tax, at minimum on groceries on your drugs on everything. That doesn't eliminate state sales tax, that doesn't eliminate local payroll taxes."
With just under 21 days to go in the race a recent poll shows Rand Paul ahead of Conway by three points.
