Trial Postponed for Woman Charged in Fatal Fire

By AP

Fort Campbell, KY – The federal trial of a woman charged with setting fire to her home and killing two of her children has been postponed in Paducah. U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell yesterday delayed the trial of Billi Jo Smallwood schedule for Monday. Smallwood has pleaded not guilty to malicious damage and destruction by fire to federal property, resulting in deaths in the 2007 blaze at Fort Campbell. Her two children, 9-year-old Sam Fagan, and 2-year-old Rebekah Smallwood, died in the fire. Smallwood's husband, Army Specialist Wayne Smallwood, and their toddler daughter survived. Prosecutors asked for the delay to appeal a ruling excluding some evidence from the trial. Defense attorneys filed an objection to the delay yesterday afternoon.
