Cairo, Ill. – Authorities are trying to pinpoint what sparked a weekend blaze that destroyed three downtown buildings in Cairo, Illinois. The fire started early Sunday in the old Speakeasy Tavern building on Washington. Fire Chief John Meyer says the building was being used for storage. Burning ashes that blew from the fire reached the nearby Alexander County Courthouse's roof, which also was damaged. Meyer says it could be two or three days before investigators can enter the structure to determine the cause.
