Frankfort, KY – It has been two and a half years since the high school class of 2008 graduated. Now the Kentucky Department of Education is examining the college readiness of that class. Spokeswoman Lisa Gross says a third of 2008 grads needed classes in subjects they should have learned in high school. Gross says high schools must do a better job of focusing on the needs of individual students.
"One of the ways they do that is by using the individual learning plan that all Kentucky public schools have access to. Students get involved in setting this up. They make a decision about what they want to do after high school. And the individual learning plan can help sort of tailor a course load."
While unprepared, nearly two-thirds of the 2008 class enrolled in college. That number is up from 51 percent in 2004.
