Murray, KY – A Murray house fire today believed to be caused by a knocked over space heater isn't likely to be the last of the winter season. Information Officer for the Public Protection Cabinet Ricki Gardenhire says space heater fires are common but homeowners can take precautions.
"One of the first things you need to do is have a three foot kid-free zone around your fires and your portable heaters. Keep children away from them. Don't let them play around them. Also, you can use the fireplace screen to keep your sparks inside your fireplace. It's very important to remember to turn your space heaters off when you go to bed at night or leave the room or your house."
Gardenhire says roughly one-third of house fires in occur during winter months.
