Murray, KY – A morning fire in Murray yesterday caused by, what investigators think, to be a knocked over space heater serves as a reminder for residents as winter approaches. Roughly one-third of home fires and home fire deaths occur during December, January, and February. Information Officer for the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet, Ricki Gardenhire expresses the importance of smoke alarm maintenance during these high risk months.
"Replace your smoke alarms, especially the batteries every year. Since we did switch out of Daylight Savings Time, now is always a good time to test your fire alarms. Make sure your smoke alarms have fresh batteries in them."
The Kentucky Division of Fire Prevention recommends home owners to install smoke alarms in every room and take extra precautions when using space heaters and fireplaces this winter.
