Frankfort, KY – Sexual assault victims in Kentucky have more options after a bill signed into law earlier this year makes forensic medical examinations available to victims regardless of whether they report it to police or not. Previously, the Sexual Assault Forensic Exams or SAFE tests were only made available to victims who reported a crime to law enforcement. Health facilities must keep the test results on hand for at least 90 days, in case a victim decides to report it to police. Officials hope the move will encourage more people to at least seek medical assistance because many sexual crimes go unreported.
