Frankfort, KY – A bill pre-filed in the Kentucky House would require the three branches of state government, as well as public universities, to make financial information available online. The measure backs up current procedure. Bill sponsor Representative Mike Cherry of Princeton says many state departments already post their financial records, but he thinks the practice should be law rather than policy.
"Putting something into law makes sure we don't get complacent or slip or quit doing something everybody thinks needs to be done." 8 sec.
The bill requires government maintain a website that outlines payments and explains the reason for each payment, with monthly updates. Public universities would not have to update online records as often. Democrat Cherry co-sponsored similar legislation last session, but he says the budget talks trumped focus on the bill.
