Hanson, KY – The Hanson city council is set to pass a measure that would bring in more tax revenue to help pay for a city-wide sewer project. The council passed the first reading of a law that would divert a tax that insurance-providers pay to Hopkins County. The Madisonville Messenger reports the county allows cities to divert as much or as little as they want of the tax. Hanson officials plan to use the more than 77-thousand dollars generated annually to finish their sewer upgrade. Hanson had received a Community Development Block Grant to cover costs, but it hasn't been enough to complete the project. Council member Mickey DeMoss opposed taking in the tax, saying it would affect some county services, like garbage pickup. The council hears a second reading Friday.
