Springfield, IL – With the possibility of legal civil unions in Illinois supporters and opponents are engaged in intense lobbying efforts. Backers said yesterday they're close to having
enough votes in the Illinois House. They're trying to pick up the remaining votes by talking directly to legislators, having constituents contact their lawmakers and arranging a news conference with religious leaders who support civil unions.
Supporters cast the issue as a matter of simple fairness for same-sex couples. But opponents are working hard, too. They argue the measure amounts to same-sex marriage under a different name.
The Catholic Conference of Illinois opposes the measure. Bishops are contacting legislators, and bulletins are going to Catholic leaders across Illinois. Other conservative groups are also contacting churches and urging them to speak out.
