Lexington, KY – Economists say Kentucky agriculture's rising cash receipts may put the industry on the verge of becoming a $5 billion industry for the first time in the state's history. University of Kentucky ag economists forecast agriculture cash receipts will reach $4.4 billion to $4.7 billion this year, up from $4.3 billion in 2009. They point to strong exports and high grain prices as among the reasons for the upswing. UK ag economist Craig Infanger predicts 2011 cash receipts in the farming sector could break $5 on the strength of exports and grain markets. It's not entirely rosy for Kentucky agriculture. UK ag economist Will Snell said burley tobacco producers are struggling with lower demand for their leaf.
