Madisonville, KY – The city of Madisonville may take over a county tax to pay for employee retirement. Mayor-elect David Jackson says the city's retirement obligation is increasing by 291-thousand dollars per year. An option to pay that would be to collect Madisonville's entire portion of a county-wide insurance-provider tax. Currently the city collects 85 percent of the tax, with the county taking the rest. Hopkins County Judge-Executive Donnie Carroll says the county would lose over 300-thousand dollars annually. Carroll tells the Madisonville Messenger the fiscal court may ask the city to pay for hauling and dumping at the county landfill to make up for the loss. Carroll says that amounts to around 100-thousand dollars a year. Hanson city council members voted down an ordinance Friday that would have increased that city's insurance tax portion.
