Knoxville, TN – The Tennessee Valley Authority has made a deal that will provide 44 megawatts of power from a wind farm in Iowa. One megawatt of wind-generated power is enough to power about 250 homes. The utility said in a statement Wednesday that the 20-year agreement with Horizon Wind Energy LLC will supply TVA with electricity generated by 50 turbines at Horizon's Pioneer Prairie wind farm. TVA expects to begin receiving electricity from the wind farm by January 2012, subject to environmental requirements and securing firm transmission arrangements. TVA previously agreed to buy up to 115 megawatts of wind power from Horizon. The Knoxville-based utility has contracted for about 1,600 megawatts of renewable wind power. That compares to power generated by two typical coal plants.
