Nashville, TN – Tennessee lawmakers may reconsider their hands-off approach to traffic cameras that make it cheaper for local governments to catch speeders and red-light violators. Lawmakers are discussing possible state rules intended to make sure the camera programs boost safety and don't create "speed traps." Republican state Representative Vince Dean says there have to be statewide standards to stop companies from setting up what he called "legal" speed traps. Dean is vice chairman of the House Transportation Committee and last year he was among lawmakers who opposed efforts to crack down on photo-enforcement programs. A legislative panel held a recent discussion on the cameras that are used by about 20 cities in Tennessee.
