Madisonville, KY – Locals with live Christmas trees will soon look to dispose of them, and fish and wildlife officials have a unique way to do it. Fishery Program Coordinator out of Madisonville Rob Rold is just one of many officials who deposit the evergreen trees into local lakes and other waterways. He says farm ponds have a lot to gain from the practice.
"A lot of man made farm ponds that are dug, they just don't have a lot of structure. And fish, like any other animal, likes to have something to hang around. You don't see animals out in the middle of fields just hanging out, they like to have a little hide or a safe place, fish are the same way."
Rold and his colleagues pick up trees after Christmas from residences as well as unused trees from large and small tree vendors. Otherwise, many local cities offer free curbside pick up.
