McMillan Asks State Legislators about Piper's New Job

By Chris Taylor

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan is asking state legislators to request a legal opinion on the legality of her predecessor accepting a new top city job. Former Mayor Johnny Piper has accepted an offer by Clarksville's Power Board to oversee the cable provider CDE Lightband. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports Piper's hiring has come under crossfire both for its handling and because it appears to violate a law, requiring outgoing mayors to wait one year before taking on another city department position. An attorney for the Power Board argues it's governed by the Municipal Electric Plant Law of 1935 and isn't under the same restrictions as other departments.
