Frankfort, KY – The first day of the 2011 session of the Kentucky General Assembly was unusually busy in the state senate. A series of GOP sponsored bills were presented to senators, who then sent them to committee for consideration. With taxpayers complaining about the cost of such sessions, Senate Majority Floor Leader Robert Stivers says Republicans wanted a quick start
"It has been made very clear to us, in the recent elections, that individuals don't particularly care for us coming to Frankfort and not doing our work and getting paid."
Lexington senator Kathy Stein thanked the senate's Republican leaders for allowing Democrats to also see the legislation early in the session. She worried the fast track pace could come at the expense of full understanding of the measures.
"Well I've been here since 97 and this is the first time I've seen us move with such rapidity."
Senate president David Williams, who's running for governor, says many of these issues are not new to the senate. Williams said full votes by the full senate could come as soon as Thursday.
