Paducah, KY – McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry and Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton delivered state of the county and city addresses at this morning's Chamber Breakfast. Both leaders focused on the positive, emphasizing economic development and the county's financial stability. Newberry says making sure the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant stays viable is a top legislative priority.
"I believe that we this year can lift the state's short-sighted and economically stunting nuclear moratorium. We really need to get that done."
Mayor Paxton echoed the sentiment in his remarks. Paducah Senator Bob Leeper has filed a bill that would lift the moratorium. It's under consideration by the Natural Resources and Energy Committee. Other large-scale projects Paxton mentioned included construction of a new minimum security jail to relieve overcrowding, and the start of the first phase of a riverfront development project. Paxton is in his third and last term office. Newberry is in his second.
