Frankfort, KY – The bill allows police to check a person's immigration status when there's a reasonable suspicion. If enacted into law, it could result in deportation. London Senator Tom Jensen addressed his colleagues earlier today.
"We do not know who's coming in through our borders, they could be enemies, we certain know drug dealers are coming in," said Jensen.
Hardin county senator Mike Wilson cast a yes vote. Wilson says the law would also targets terrorists.
"Those who are coming from countries that are from the middle east who have intentions of doing harm to us through terroristic tactics. I don't think that we've considered that," said Wilson.
Opponents argue the arrest of illegal immigrants could put a real financial strain on county jails. Opponents say the legislation would flood Kentucky's jails. Louisville Senator Gerald Neal says Kentucky cannot afford the cost.
"This is a complex issue we're gonna' have to wrestle with in we live in a new reality we do live in a new reality and we d better factor that in as we begin to set policy in this state, I vote no," said Neal.
Lexington Senator Kathy Stein adds some religious organizations also have concerns.
"I believe that we are very well aware of a number of faith groups who have expressed deep concern over this legislation not only for its constitutionality but for its humanity as well," said Stein.
The bill goes on to the house. Committee chairs in that chamber will review several senate passed bills, including immigration legislation, before the general assembly comes back in session in February.
