Bowling Green, KY – Among other gun-related measures, Kentucky lawmakers this session are considering whether a permit is needed to carry a concealed weapon. Under a bill by Danville representative Mike Harmon, people over the age of 21 could carry a concealed firearm without a permit. Under current law, training and licensing costs around $150, and for some, Harmon says the costs deter Kentuckians from their second amendment right.
"They'll spend anywhere from $125 to $150 for that before they purchase their gun. Now for the average citizen, it's not too bad. But by the time you get from a financial standpoint to lower to lower middle class. It makes it very difficult."
The legislation is getting a cool reception from law enforcement who argue the permitting process provides them a record of who has a concealed weapon. They say not knowing who is carrying could create dangerous situations for police and the public.
