Frankfort, KY – A powerful lawmaker is questioning why state officials have submitted a new rule that limits information about the actions of social workers in cases involving a child's serious injury or death. The new regulation was filed by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services on January 3rd. Republican State Senator Julie Denton says she was concerned the rule didn't promote openness and appears to "circumvent the court." Denton heads the Senate's Health and Welfare Committee. The regulation was filed weeks after a judge in Frankfort ordered the cabinet to release hundreds of pages on the May 2009 death of an infant who died after drinking drain cleaner. Before the order, the cabinet had refused to release files on children who died while being monitored by social workers.
