Nashville, TN – Tennessee Republicans now hold control of both chambers of the Legislature and the governor's office for the first time since 1869. However, newly-inaugurated Governor Bill Haslam's predecessors say he shouldn't expect a smooth road ahead for his agenda. Republican former Governor, now U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, says just because the governor and the legislative majority are of the same party doesn't mean they'll always agree. Alexander says governing is "hard and messy" and the results are never quite what the governor had hoped. Democrat Ned McWherter served two terms as governor after being House speaker. He quickly drew a line with former legislative colleagues who thought they had influence in the executive branch.
