Murray, KY – Calloway County's Judge Executive and Murray's Mayor delivered their state of the community addresses at this morning's Chamber of Commerce Breakfast. Newly elected Mayor Bill Wells gave most of his time over to the city's recently hired police and fire chiefs. Wells says he wanted to give them a chance to introduce themselves to the community. Police Chief Jeff Lyles highlighted the need for a new public safety building and raises for officers. Wells hesitated to offer full backing to the idea.
"We're going to do what we can in the city, actually I've heard it five times. I knew he was going to mention it again today. But it doesn't matter to me. It's the passion that they have for their departments. I want him to stick up for the police department. Chief Pologruto's going to do the same thing for the fire department."
Judge Executive Larry Elkins highlighted several projects for 2011 and beyond. Elkins says this year the county will go independent from the Purchase District Health Department. Officials also plan improvements to the animal shelter and the Weaks Community Center.
