Murray, KY – National Park officials plan to make the Fort Heiman Civil War historic site in Calloway County more accessible to visitors this summer. Park Superintendent Steve McCoy says workers will put up wayside exhibits next to important parts of the site.
"It's a way to provide pictures and maps and artwork with text to try to paint a picture and inform people of what they're looking at, and usually the waysides are pretty specific to a site location."
McCoy hopes to have those signs in place by Memorial Day. Workers will also continue restoring the fort's earthworks. Restoration at the location has been slow due to limited funding. McCoy says the majority of the money comes from sister-site Fort Donelson's operating budget.
