Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission says enlisting Kentucky police in a crackdown on illegal immigrants could cost taxpayers $89 million a year. The estimates raised additional objections yesterday from critics of a proposal that is halfway through the legislative process. The legislation would give local and state police agencies broad authority under federal law to check people's immigration status. Proponents warn Kentucky may become a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants if the legislation doesn't pass. The bill is criticized to be even tougher than a similar Arizona immigration law passed last year which has drawn boycotts and legal challenges.
