Kentucky Colleges Plan K-12 Involvement

By Tony McVeigh

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky colleges plan to get more involved with G-E-D and K-12 programs, in hopes of boosting college retention and graduation rates. Council on Postsecondary Education President Robert King says only 57 percent of college freshmen in Kentucky are meeting college readiness standards.

"For those students who enter the university under-prepared, in need of remediation, are graduating at only about half the rate of those students who are coming to us ready to take credit-generating courses."

King says the universities want do more to improve the effectiveness of teachers and administrators, and boost enrollment in research programs, which create jobs. He says the universities are developing performance targets, and will frequently provide lawmakers with reports on the progress being made.
