KY Sesqui

By Charles Compton

Richmond, KY – Hoping to avoid the mistakes made in other states, the organizers of Kentucky's commemoration of the US Civil War promise to be sensitive to the concerns of African-Americans. In April, the nation marks the 150th anniversary of the war's outbreak. State Senator Tom Buford is a member of Kentucky's Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.

"I think that if we go back in the areas and we treat it with respect for the Black, African-Americans, we'll have a wonderful celebration. And, we can learn from some of the mistakes that the other states have already started out on."

In South Carolina, African-Americans picketed a sessionist ball that featured ballroom dancers and a mostly white audience. More on Kentucky's Civil War will be discussed Friday afternoon at 1PM, during WEKU's Eastern Standard.
