Murray, KY – Recent legislature proposed by Congress is calling for the government to halt federal funding of public broadcasting as a means to reduce the national deficit. Democratic Kentucky Congressman Ben Chandler said there's no question that federal spending has to be reduced. However, Chandler said wiping out support for the corporation for public broadcasting is a bad idea.
"Zeroing out funding for one of the most successful public private partnerships responsible for 21,000 good American jobs isn't the thing to do. In these tough economic times more than ever we need to support American jobs, and invest in our people. And cutting funding for public broadcasting does neither. "
Chandler said many Kentuckians depend on public broadcasting for a civil dialogue that presents both sides of the story.
