Metropolis votes to regulate sexually oriented businesses'

By Todd Hatton/Paducah Sun

Metropolis, IL – The Metropolis, Illinois City Council has adopted an ordinance to regulate sexually oriented businesses within city limits. The council voted in favor of the ordinance after a lengthy Monday night session in a packed council chamber. The attorney the city hired to help draft the ordinance, Scott Bergthold, tells the Paducah Sun the law regulates against the secondary effects of a sexually oriented business. Bergthold defined them as falling property values, personal and property crimes, public indecency, health hazards and excessive noise. Cape Girardeau attorney John Schneider represents the Metro Pony adult club. He recommended council members table the matter and see if any secondary issues arise. However, once the floor was closed to public comment, the city council adopted the ordinance.
