City-County Merger Council on Law Enforcement

By Chris Taylor

Paducah, KY – The 21-member council studying a potential merger between the city of Paducah and McCracken County has raised many questions about law enforcement and finances. The committee met yesterday with Paducah Police Chief James Berry and McCracken County Chief Deputy Mike Turnbow. Among the biggest issues are employee status and salary differences. City police are unionized and make about $10,000 more than county sheriff's deputies, who are mainly at-will employees. The Paducah Sun reports the group directed questions on how to address the discrepancies to the county attorney. The council will meet again next month.
