Illinois prosecutors, advocates await Quinn's decision

By Jacque Day

Illinois – Some Illinois prosecutors say they're concerned that their jobs might get more difficult if Governor Pat Quinn agrees to sign a measure that would outlaw capital punishment. Many states' attorneys use the death penalty, or merely the threat of it, as a bargaining chip in getting guilty pleas from suspects who opt for life in prison. Advocates pressing Quinn not to sign the measure say the prospect of executing an innocent man is grounds enough to get rid of the death penalty. The measure went to the governor a month ago. If not acted upon, the bill becomes law March 18.
