Frankfort, KY – A Kentucky Senate panel has advanced a bill calling for the state to seek out test projects for underground storage of carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. The bill got a strong endorsement Wednesday from Governor Steve Beshear's administration. The measure calls for the state Energy and Environment Cabinet to pursue up to five demonstration projects for underground carbon storage. The House has already passed the measure, and the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee approved it without making any changes. If the bill passes the Senate intact, it would go to the governor. Kentucky Environmental Secretary Len Peters says capturing and storing carbon is a key strategy of clean-coal technology. He says carbon storage technology needs to progress from the laboratories to test projects.
