Governor Considering Signing Optometry Bill

By Lisa Autry

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear isn't saying yet if he'll sign a bill allowing optometrists to perform some medical procedures now reserved for eye surgeons.

"I am reviewing that bill right now. I have met with both the ophthalmologist group and the optometrist group to gather as much information as I can. We are looking at other states, we are looking and talking to our Medicaid people to see if there is any additional cost to this."

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bobbie Holsclaw is asking for an investigation into the bill. Holsclaw says she's not alleging wrongdoing, but she has concerns about how quickly the bill passed in the legislature. It's the only bill to clear both the house and senate so far in this 30-day session. Optometrists contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaigns of state lawmakers over the past year.
