Frankfort, KY – An optometry bill opposed by the Kentucky Medical Association has been signed into law by Governor Steve Beshear. Beshear says he signed Senate Bill 110 into law "to give Kentuckians greater access to necessary eye care." The bill, heavily lobbied by optometrists, overwhelmingly passed the House and Senate with broad, bipartisan support. The measure allows optometrists to conduct some minor surgical procedures currently only performed by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors. To provide the greatest degree of oversight, Governor Beshear says he will be meeting with the Board of Optometric Examiners to make sure providers of the services undergo extensive training.
