Clarksville, TN – The city of Clarksville, Tennessee may seek restitution from a man who broke the hand off of a statue of a World War I soldier. City Councilwoman Deanna McLaughlin plans to propose a resolution this week instructing the city attorney to take all lawful action to recover $8,000 worth of damage done to the statue. McLaughlin says the goal is to ensure that people understand they are responsible for their actions. 27-year-old veteran Matthew Arrington claims he broke the hand off in November when he pulled on the bronze rifle to see if it was real and broke the hand holding it in the process. McLaughlin's resolution would also create an ethics code exemption to allow repairs to be done by city employee Scott Wise, the sculptor who restored the statute.
