Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear is reiterating his opposition to cutting education to balance Medicaid. Beshear is highly critical of the budget-balancing bill approved by the Republican-controlled Senate, which calls for across-the-board cuts to state agencies, including education. The House voted for the governor's plan, which requires no cuts.
"We are not going to allow Sen. Williams balance the Medicaid budget on the backs of our school children, our college students, our state troopers, our veterans, our prosecutors, our social workers and many others."
Standing behind the governor as he made his remarks at the State Capitol were House Democratic leaders. House Republicans have also come out against cuts to education. House and Senate negotiators will try to reach agreement on Medicaid in the waning days of the legislative session.
