UT Faculty Senate to Vote on Gun Resolution

By Angela Hatton

Knoxville, TN – The University of Tennessee faculty senate is scheduled to vote today against proposed changes to state laws that would allow employees to carry handguns on campus. An engineering professor who co-wrote a resolution says police, not faculty, are trained to handle emergencies and they should be the ones with guns. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports a bill sponsored by state Senator Stacey Campfield would allow full-time faculty and staff, who are not otherwise prohibited, to carry guns on public college campuses where they work. University Government Relations Vice President Hank Dye says UT officials vehemently oppose the bill and have talked with lawmakers.
