Lexington, KY – Despite a rise in student enrollment in public schools, the Kentucky Center for School Safety says the number of disciplinary actions for code of conduct violations is down nearly 21% over five years. The number of students who are punished for criminal offenses against person or property has generally remained stable. But center director Jon Akers says not all of the data are positive
"I am seeing, in Part II Law Violations, something that kind of disturbs me that we're seeing an uptick of drug abuse in our schools and particularly in the area of prescription drug abuse and that concerns us considerably."
Akers says the goal of the study is to get teachers, administrators, and parents looking at how their school district compares to others around the state. He says the Center for School Safety report should not be used as any kind of indicator or explanation for test scores.
