Louisville, KY – Kentucky State Auditor Crit Luallan is calling for greater transparency by a nonprofit group that runs inmate halfway houses, including two in Owensboro. Luallan says she can't determine whether Dismas Charities spends public funds appropriately because the group failed to turn over information requested. The organization claims it supplied more than 1,200 pages of records and called itself a "good steward" of its mission. The audit comes after reports revealing Dismas spent money for suites at the KFC Yum! Center and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The audit also questions spending by Dismas to sponsor Bellarmine University's basketball team and to host an annual Derby gala, a holiday open house and golf outings.
