Washington, D. C. – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear testified in Washington today at a House committee hearing on prescription drug abuse. He told lawmakers although Kentucky has a prescription drug monitoring program, it doesn't stop addicts from crossing state lines to get their pills.
"What is needed, clearly, is an aggressive nationwide response; One that recognizes that this country's prescription drug strategy is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain."
Beshear urges Congress to continuing funding a prescription monitoring grant program named for Kentucky Congressman Hal Rogers. He says controlled substance prescribers should undergo mandatory training and that the Department of Justice should focus more resources on Florida, which is the top source of pills flowing into Kentucky.
