McCracken County, KY – Under a recent agreement with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the Tennessee Valley Authority must address emissions of two units at the Shawnee Fossil Plant in McCracken County. TVA must either install scrubber equipment to remove sulfur and nitrogen, convert the units to biomass, or retire them by the end of 2017. The Paducah Sun reports Kentucky US Representative Ed Whitfield is balking at the announcement, which calls 18 older units at three TVA plants across the south to be retired. Environmental groups hail the agreement as historic in scope.
