Frankfort, KY – Kentucky is a closed primary state, so if you register as a Democrat, you have to vote in the Democratic primary on May 17th. But Secretary of State Elaine Walker says if you're a Democrat and want to become a Republican, you had to change your party affiliation before January 1st to participate in the primary.
"From January 1st to April 18th, if you changed you party affiliation you are ineligible to vote in this primary. We have already sent out letters to people who have changed their party affiliation, to let them know, to make them aware of this."
However, that rule does not apply to the November 8th general election. Minors who will be 18 before the general election are eligible and entitled to go ahead and register to vote in the upcoming primary.
