Nashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam's proposal to limit lawsuit damages yesterday passed the House Judiciary Committee. The Republican governor originally sought to place a $750,000 limit on non-economic damages such as pain and suffering. However, as the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports, the measure advancing in the House would raise that cap to $1 million in specific cases. Those include cases of serious spinal cord injuries, severe burns, or the death of a parent of minor children. Haslam says he wants to create a comfortable environment for businesses, while the measure's opponents say damages help hold companies accountable and juries should award amounts.
