Stormy Spring Could Bring Normal Summer Rainfall

By Stu Johnson

Kentucky – Springtime in Kentucky has always been stormy. But, University of Kentucky agricultural meteorologist Tom Priddy says this spring has been worse, and he anticipates above average stormy weather for the remainder of the season. He blames sea surface temperatures along the equator in the Pacific Ocean. "You can't say that any one storm is caused by El Nino or La Nina but the trend of the weather is what's been set up." Right now, Priddy says La Nina appears to be waning. If trends continue, Priddy says farmers might see normal rainfall, unlike the last few years. "While we're not looking for that extreme to go into a very dry pattern again. We would anticipate to go into a more normal weather pattern as we move into the summer time." Priddy says forecasters will release the long-term outlook, including for the summer months, in the next few days.
