Murray, KY – Some Western Kentucky homeowners, business owners, and renters can still buy flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program for damages caused by recent flooding. Kentucky Division of Water official Marilyn Thomas says many far Western Counties are included in the program except for Fulton, Hickman, Lyon and Graves. The National Flood Insurance Program is designed to provide assistance to disaster areas when other federal aid isn't available. President Obama hasn't yet signed a federal disaster declaration for Kentucky, but Thomas expects Obama to take action later this week. Participating counties must meet certain flood-conscious standards like building flood resistant structures and not developing in flood prone areas. In exchange, property owners are eligible for the national flood insurance- which covers physical damage to property from flooding.
